What does it mean to “pick up your cross”? A cross is a rough, unwanted and really, really heavy thing…especially if you are already in a weakened state as you reach down to grasp it. It is a terrifying diagnosis, an unexpected pregnancy, a troubled relationship. It is a large debt, a disabled child, or becoming a victim of a crime. It takes spiritual fortitude to carry that cross and not be crushed under its weight. It takes finding strength in something much higher than yourself. Jesus could have easily returned to Egypt or hid in a cave, away from his captors. Yet, he knew the Father’s will, and knew it must override his own, even to death. Our comfort is that he walks our difficult journeys with us. Our hope is in his resurrection.
It takes spiritual fortitude to carry a cross and not be crushed under its weight.
Color is symbolic in each of my Stations pieces: Red = Points of pain; White = Movement of the Holy Spirit; Blue = God’s presence; Black = the weight of the cross; Neutrals = Humanity.
