There was no plan I know of from the Roman or Jewish leaders to handle Jesus’ body after death. Crucified bodies were probably left to rot and be picked at by birds as a warning to other zealots. But Jesus wasn’t just any-body. He was the Lamb of God.
Joseph of Arimathea was most likely a member of the Sanhedrin, but also a disciple of Jesus. He kept his status hidden for fear of the Jews. But after the crucifixion, found the courage to risk his own safety to ask Pilot if he might bury Jesus in his personal tomb, observing Jewish tradition. As the “omega” of his earthy life ends, we remain still while Jesus gathers all souls to the “alpha” of the next. Once again, we are in a garden… this time the grain is planted and we await new life.
Color is symbolic in each of my Stations pieces: Red = Points of pain; White = Movement of the Holy Spirit; Blue = God’s presence; Black = the weight of the cross; Neutrals = Humanity.
